Marcel Huertas was the last player called into Puerto Rico’s team for the 2010 FIBA World Championship, entering the fold after two of the country’s “historical players”, Christian Dalmau and Larry ‘Elias’ Ayuso, unhappy with their roles on the team, decided to leave.
Huertas jumped at the opportunity and joined the team.
At only 23, he has moved quite a lot during his basketball career, playing for three different high schools before enrolling at Florida University prior to the 2005-06 season.
He played there for a year, winning an NCAA trophy in the 2006 spring. Unhappy with his role (2.5 ppg as a freshman), he decided to move to Mississipi and had to redshirt the following season.
Huertas then had two solid years in the NCAA, averaging 18.1 points and 4.5 rebounds as a senior.
Undrafted, he had his first pro experience abroad, with Fos Provence in the French Pro B where he was the league’s fifth best scorer (16.1 ppg).
He left the club last March to head back home and join the Piratas Quebradillas.
He has thrived in that environment, proving to be a very accurate tshooter, averaging 16.1 ppg while shooting over 40% from behind the arc and over 51% from the field.
